  • F-1 Visa Approved but in Administrative Processing

I had my F-1 visa interview today (July 24 2018) to study Computer Science, and the VO said my visa was approved, kept my passport, and said I'll receive it in a few days.

However, when I check my visa status in the CEAC website, it reads the following:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Administrative Processing

Application ID or Case Number: YYYY YYYY X
    Case Created: 23-Jul-2018
    Case Last Updated: 24-Jul-2018

Your visa case is currently undergoing necessary administrative processing. This processing can take several weeks. Please follow any instructions provided by the Consular Officer at the time of your interview. If further information is needed, you will be contacted. If your visa application is approved, it will be processed and mailed/available within two business days.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What does that mean? I thought Administrative Processing only occurred when you received 221(g), instead of when the VO says the visa is approved. Is that a big deal?

Hi there I have the same issue. I attended the interview yesterday for renewal of my visa and VO said that the Visa is approved, when I check the website, it stats administrative process.
While checking with few people including agency, they said that all the cases fall in to admin process once the visa stamped the staus will change. I hope it is true.
When was your OFC appointment 23/07/2018?

It happened to me 7 years ago too. They kept my passport after 1 month, which was already passed my intended arrival date. It really screwed my plan for school and I had to get another I-20 and attend school in the next semester instead of the original one.

Hopefully it won't happen to you, it also varies case by case.

Okay so I have had this experience I attended F1 on June 26. VO said it should be ready 3-4 business days but I was amazed when I came back, I checked the status to which it said Administrative processing. I didn?t panic but waited everyday. My case created was June 25 and case update was June 26(the day of interview) it also wasn?t the first time I was applying for an F1, it was my second F1 visa. I started checking each and everyday trying to see if case has been updated but it remained in AP. I started reading and I heard about semester deferment and all the horror stories, it took 15 days for the first case update to show up. It was July 11 when the first update came through and July 12 it states issued. On CGi website it kept on saying no status is available and later afternoon on July 12 it said origination scan and in an hour can be picked up. So don?t worry, they normally say 3-4 business days but hardly is issued they neeed to do a security check and match finger prints the biometrics and see if there is any security risks if not they usually issue visa very quick. And this experience is current happened last month and I am set to leave in August. I hope it helps and hope you get the visa soon.

I had the similar but little different case where VO mentioned it is approved ...but the next day got an email to provide more personal information which I have provided. I am not sure how many days it will take. Consulate website says it takes 6 months to complete administrative processing. Anyone had the same experience?
