F1 Extension

I am a student in US on F1 visa and doing my Ph.D.My F1 visa expires on 20th June 2007. I think it will take another six to nine months to compleate my research. I want to apply for extension of my visa.My questions are as follows:-
1.Can I apply for extension after the expiry of my current visa?
2.Can I apply for extension from Canada or should I visit India to get extension?
The above query is raised because of the fact that I would like to travel to India during December 2007.
