Student visa and grace period

I have a student visa, and I was going to school until spring. I had scholarship there, but it didn't work for me. Right now, I can't affort to pay for my school, and I'm thinking about to change my student visa to a work visa. First, I want to know how long can I stay in U.S without going to school, even though my student visa is not expired yet? And what do I need to do to change my student visa to a work visa? Is it possible? I appreciate for your help!

There is no grace period. You should leave immediately as you are out of status now.
