I came to Wayne State University as a Masters student last year (Fall 2006) with GRA Funding. Later (from Fall 2007) my department shifted me to the PhD program. Now I am recipient of a Fellowship showing funding of $42,000 for 12 months, while total expenses are $29000/year (written in my new I-20). My fiancee is planning to apply for US universities as a F-1 student. Her major is English literature. She has a GRE score of 1420, and 101 in TOEFL IBT. But some of my friends are suggesting me to get registry marriage this december as i am visiting india this year and to bring her in F-2 visa (though i am not sure about its approval), from where she can later go to F-1 visa. My question is which option is better for her considering all the things? Applying as a F-1 visa student? Or should she try to get F-2 visa and then to F-1 visa? Kindly suggest.
