change of status B1 to F1

Hi,
I am currently here on a B1/B2 visa and my I-94 is valid till Dec 22nd. I applied for a change of status to F1 visa on 28th Nov. I am yet to receive the I-797 notice of receipt. However I have the certified mail receipt from the USPS as well as the SEVIS fee receipt. In the event that I get the I-797 receipt after the 22nd, could I rely on the certified mail as valid proof of a pending visa case and continue to stay in the US?
