  • Does an f1 visa expire when I finish school

    Hi,

    I wanted to know if
    - an F1 visa expires on the last date that is mentioned on it ?
    - or on the last day of school for the degree it was intended which is earlier than the last day on the visa itself ?

I wanted to know this because, I want to get back to another school for another degree and if it is possible to use the old visa for the same.

    Thanks
    raga

The visa expires on the date it says on the stamp (visa on your passport) itself.

But your "student status" given to you in the I-94 when you enter will not expire until you finish your education.

You can get help from the international students office on how to extend to your status to pursue master's degrees or other majors, even on different schools.

I know people who have been in the US studying for 10 years, even though their visa expired, their I-94 status hasn't.

      out of status query

      Hi,

Thank you very much for the previous response. This is my situation:

My last day of school on my i20 was july 18th, 2007. My application of OPT was rejected because it was received on the july 20th, 2007. The notice of denial was received on 29th OCT. I took an admit into a new school in the first week of nov with a new I20 and a new sevis and re-entered the country with a new I94. Am I back in status because of this or do I need a new visa ( current one valid for another 3 years ) to put me back on student status.

Can you please throw some light on this situation. Thank you very much..

If you were admited and your new I-94 states "D/S" you are back in status.

          Hi,

Thanks again for clearing that out. Have one last question.

would this small duration of out of status stay in anyway adversely affect my H1-B application (under the masters quota) next year?

          Thanks
          raga

It is very unlikely. But if asked, do not lie.
