Credits

I will be completing my course this coming summer.i only have 9 credits left to complete my course.. kindly let me know if i can just take those 9 credits) because it will work out way cheaper.. i know i need to have 12 credits minimum to stay in status; being an int students, but i also believe that there is an exception when you're on you're last term?.. please provide me with any details..
