I am a continuing PhD student in USA. Currently I am in Germany with my advisor for research and collaboration purpose. I came here in Germany on 5th February and will be back to USA on 31st July. I had registered for spring semester as well as registered for this summer term also. So my SEVIS is updated and I am maintaining my F-1 status. Since I am away from USA more than 5 months, do I need to apply for new F-1 visa again?

Ask your school DSO/ISO. They have better information as you are still registering for the classes and continuing your research outside the US.
