I-539 filed but need to leave country

Previously i obtained F2 visa from Kolkata US consulate . After coming to US , i was interested to join higher studies in computer science as i have already has the background . I have got the admission for Masters degree with full financial assistantship starting from fall 2008 . I have already filed for change of visa status from F2 to F1 at USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) in May 2008 . The case is still showing pending in USCIS website .

But due medical emergency reason , , i need to visit india with my husband . In this situation if i go to India , can i apply F1 visa from Kolkata US consulate ?

Also my passport is expiring after almost 6 months (19th Jan , 2009) , will it be suitable for applying F1 visa on that passport ?

IF you leave while the COS is pending, the COS application will be deemed abandoned by USCIS.

You can apprear for an F1 visa. For passport, I think it has to be valid at least 6 months after the intended date of entry/interview date. I am not sure about the passport part. Check with VFS.
