  • please hlep regarding I-20

    Hi All,,

I appreciate evreyone concerning visa issues in this form.

I have question concerning issued I-20 for Fall 2008. I have been accepted for Doctorate program( Chemistry) in Florida Inistiute of Technology. I received my I-20 4 days ago. But I found a small mistake in it. I-20 is indicating that i am going to pursue M.S not Phd but couse duration is as usual like 60 months . I contacted graduate office they told me it is not a problem because duration is 60 months and i can go head for visa without wasting of time. (reporting time august 8th). So i am preparing to attend visa, while filling up Ds-156 I can write going for Phd program( 60 months) or i must write as per I-20 M.S ( 60 months).
which one is correct, i am in a state of uncertanity . please help.

And also in the I-20 it is indicating i have on line campus employment which covers my education around $ 32,200 per a year. That means do i have assstance from the university concerning money matters, so that i wont face any problem in visa interview. If it is right , do i need to show money for consequent years ( 5 years program)

    please help

You have to mention MS based on the I-20 on visa forms. Does your admit letter say PhD? If so, you can say PhD.

If the university is going to send a corrected I-20 soon before your visa appointment, then you will be fine. It hardly takes 5-10 days for mail. Sometimes, they can even Fedex/DHL it if you are ready to bear the cost which can run to 50-60 $ which in my opinion is a waste of money.

I am very thankful for immediate response. My I-20 doesnt say Phd program but showing Masters, course duration 60 months. I contacted graduate office three months ago through phone, they told me i got admission for Phd . I contacted the graduate office yestarday, they said sending about new I-20. If I didnt get before my visa appointment, what would I write in DS-156 ? M.S -60 months as per I-20 and should I explain to V.O about the mistake.

Just write MS if you don't have any documents to prove you have a PhD admission. You can get a new I-20 after coming here from the ISO changing you to the PhD program.

You have to go by the I-20. Otherwise, the VO might ask you to come back with the I-20 showing that. You are making a big deal out of this. Just wait for the I-20 or go with MS. If you noticed it many months ago, you should have gotten the new I-20 from the school by now. What were you doing till the 11th hour?

I think what you should do is request for a phd stated I-20,dont make biig deal out of it,just wiat for a new I-20 if u r going in for PHD.
