  • Wedding, F2 and name change

I have about a month and half's time in India in which I wish to get married and get an F2 for my wife.
I am having a civil (registered) marriage and not religious ceremony. Is it ok if I don't change my wife's legal name (surname) after marriage? I don't want to get into all the changing name on her passport and stuff like that. Does somebody have such an experience?
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

My wife successfully got her visa.
As I have graduated and will be on OPT, the VO was not concerned with funds because I will be earning. She did not have to show a single document. She asked my wife about our wedding, how did we meet etc.
For list of documents, first get your dependent I-20 from the school and then go to VFS website and follow the procedure. The checklist and interview guidelines which will appear after you get a confirmed appointment will show all the required documents.

          Hi Kabkaba

Actually mine is a similar case as yours and so need ur help....
My fiance is studyin in US for around 8 months..and he has a Research assistantship offering him 1820$ per month. We wanted to have a registered marriage (court marriage) only sometime in march and then apply for my F2.
But someone told us that we NEED to show photographs of the traditional Hindu marriage. As we wont be going in for that marriage,so no question of the photographs also. Will it be ok if we show just the pics of our court marriage? since urs was a similar case, what did u do?
My father in law will also be showing sufficient funds for my stay there... what do u suggest now? Without the photographs, will it be risky?

Please please help..Am in a major dilemma....

My wife had taken about 10 photographs from our registered marriage ceremony. But she was not asked for the photographs.
VO: How was your wedding ceremony?
Wife: We had a very simple marriage, not a big ceremony.
            VO: Why?
Wife: Both of us have simple tastes and we agreed on this.
VO: Good, it is important that your ideas match.

My advice, always stick to the truth.

Also, have some patience, I cannot be online 24-7 to answer questions.

Hey thanks a lot for ur reply...it sounds really helpful

But 1 more quick question....is it necessary to change my name in the passport?
I mean we can apply for F2 even without a name change in the passport, correct? Will this arouse any suspicion to the VO??

Yes, no problem with name change. As I said in the original post we do not intend to change her legal name at all in the future.

                  Ok, then thats fine....
Also is it necessary to have my spouse's name in my passport before going for the visa interview? Or can I go in without that also?

Not necessary, it takes at least 3 weeks
