Urgent travel question I-20

Hello to all international students.

I was wondering how often do you need to get the I-20 signed before you leave the US?
If I just entered in August, then I don't need to have it signed for when I leave this winter right? I thought I remember every 12 months, but then I've also heard people do it 6 months just to be sure. The international office is unexpectedly closed today at my school and my flight leaves tomorrow morning.....
