F-1 Visa - Interview dates not available (Mumbai)

Hi. My consulate is in Mumbai and I need to get an F-1 visa interview date. I have been checking dates since past few days but have not seen a single normal visa date open up. My program starts in late January 2009. I am aware of the emergency appointments but many have recommended against it.

Does anyone have information on when the dates could open up? Has a senior member on this forum seen this type of situation in the past?

Can someone please provide guidance on what to do in this situation? Thank you.
