  • Work hours in Summer on F-1

I have an offer from the University to work for around 50 - 55 hrs/ week during summer break. I was enrolled full time in Spring and will be enrolled full time in Fall.

Am I allowed to work more than 40 hrs :

    1) If I am not registered for any class during Summer

    2) If I am registered for one class during Summer

    Thanks

Yes, you can work as much as you like in vacation semester. But, you have to get authorization if the work is off-campus. If you just had one semester in F1 status, you may not be eligible for vacation semester. Check with your school's DSO.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

      Thanks for the reply.

The work is totally on-campus. So I assume I don't need any authorization to work. Please clarify this.

      and

A specific question is that is there a restriction on the number of hrs/ week during Summer if the student is taking a class as well.

      Thanks,

I think 40 is the max limit. It was, in the past. I might be wrong as I am not a recent graduate.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.

Talk to your school's DSO. There are very limited circumstances when you are allowed to fall below full time.
