Hello,
I am a doctoral student on an F-1 Visa. My i-20 is going to expire May 31, 2009. I am not reapplying for the I-20 because I am going to complete my dissertation research in El Salvador (I will still be affliliated with University through distance ed but no I-20 required). However, I am planning to return to my home country (Canada) May 28 and return to the USA June 2 to get my things and then proceed to El Salvador for mid June. The international student office told me to tell them when I was leaving and they would cancel my student status and that I will have no problem re-entering as a tourist. However, I do not believe it will be this easy. Several questions:
1. With proper documentation (i.e. plane ticket to El Sal, letters from advisors/graduate programs people) will I be able to reenter the US for this short period of time?
2. How long does one have after the expiration of this visa do I need to leave (60 days or immediately)?
3. If I am denied at the boarder, how will this affect my ability to re-enter the United States?
