  • Applying for student visa..concern reg passport expiry

    Hi,

One of my friend from India is applying for Masters to US colleges for Fall intake...she has an acceptance letter from one college...her passport expires in November 2011, her intended period of stay in US for study is 2yr as mentioned in her I20. It is written on the official website of US State gov regarding documents required at the time of student visa interview that she has to have a passport valid beyond 6 months of the intended period of stay..means that she should have a valid passport till Feb 2012 considering that she will start classes for Fall intake in August 2009...I want to know if her passport expiry date may create a problem in her being granted 5 yrs visa for US (as is the usual scenario)..she has inquired regarding the passport extension and it is known that she cannot apply for a renewal before 6 months of expiry date of the passport... In this scenario, can she be denied a visa on the basis of the passport???

    Plz help

The passport should be valid for atleast 6 months. The visa can be valid for any period and does not depend on passport expiry. They can renew the passport in the US and the visa still remains valid from the old passport. They just have to carry both passports to travel.

At entry, I-94 for a student is given as D/S - Duration of Status/Study. That isn't an issue either.

This will NOT be the reason for denial by any means.
