Can marriage hurt the student status of someone?

Hi,

If a person who is in the US on a student visa gets married (either on the US or abroad) to a US permanent resident. Will the student have problems going through immigration once they try to get back in the country?

Can getting married actually hurt the status of someone?

Typically it takes a while for process of a US permanent resident to be able to sponsor someone.
So my question is:
Can the person get married to a US perm resident and keep their current student status and be able to leave and enter the country, assuming they are waiting till the permanent resident becomes a citizen to initiate the sponsorship process?

One more info.
Both the current I-20 and passport stamp are good till 2011. Just in time till the US Perm becomes a citizen.
So no issues about trying to get a new visa stamp.

The question is related to clearing immigration.

Does anyone know the implications?
