F1 to B2: still waiting, but the school starts soon...

I applied for the change of status; F1(Student) to B2(Visiter), in end of June. Because I want to take a semester off.
I am still waiting for an approval from USCIS.

However, my current school starts in September.
In this case, can I wait for B2 Visa without going to the school?

If so, do I need report to my International office that I will terminate my I-20 in order to change of status?

Or, should I go to the school while waiting the approval? Otherwise will I become "out of status"?

Does anyone know??
