i am a graduate student with an F1 visa flying back to india for a week...my transit is through london,where i ll be waiting for 8 hours almost...do i need a transit visa for staying in london for that time???

you need to call the british consulate and ask. Next time, try to take the direct flight (Continental, Air India..) so question of transit visa does not arise. -
You need a transit visa. BA will not even issue you a boarding pass if your US visa expired and you don't have a transit visa.
