  • US Visa stamped on new passport but has number of old passport on it

During my US F1 visa application process, I was asked to get a new passport by the visa officer. So I got a new one made and had to submit both new and old passports for stamping. They correctly stamped my F1 visa in my new passport but it has my old passport number written on it.

Will it be a problem for US Customs and Immigration at any port of entry if I carry both my passports?

You should e-mail USTravelDocs and tell them about this. Or call and talk with them. They might get it restamped.

Yes, thank you. I did that and they've asked for some additional information from me. However, if I'm unable to get it corrected before I fly, is there a chance that this will cause problems at airline check-in or immigration?

It's been a while but if it can get corrected, do it and don't consider flying with incorrect information. Don't think of this as a one-time issue: if your visa is for an extended period, you might face issues every time at the airport.

We all need to understand this one thing: airline ground officials have the final say on whether you board your flight. They verify visas, status, etc. however they are not proficient in it. So, you only need to meet one person who's incompetent and arrogant for your life plans to be ruined. I was once almost denied boarding because of a consulate error and had to write an affidavit on the spot even though technically there was no issue (and the US officials did let me in). It all comes down to airline officials' poor understanding of the intricacies of visa rules.

So, make sure you get it corrected. Consider delaying your flight if needed. Also, make sure you take your old passport even after the error is corrected!

Thank you for all your help. I emailed US Travel Docs and the consulate agreed to get it corrected. They stamped "Cancelled without prejudice" on the incorrect visa and stamped a new visa with the correct passport number. I got all of this done in a week and a half.
