Does the H4 visa get cancelled if I get a F1 Visa?

The officer at the consulate did not take my old passport which has my H4 visa. I informed him that I have H4 visa. Now my new passport is with US consulate for stamping of F1 Visa.
is the H4 cancelled at consulate during F1 stamping. Would there be a problem?

If they want to cancel it, they would typically stamp "Canceled Without Prejudice" on it (heck, they stamped that on my old expired visa!). Without that you can presume that it is not canceled. They can still revoke visas within their system electronically but if they wanted to do it, they would tell you / ask you to give your old passport, etc.

You'll need to present your I-20 at the PoE and they'll automatically use your F-1 visa based on the I-20. Make sure your entry stamp says "D/S" in handwriting (which is in lieu of date when you need to leave by. F1 visas don't get a date).
