Hello, I am currently on F-1 OPT. I am planning to change visa status to H4. The start date in my OPT EAD card was March 10,2020. However, due to pandemic, I have not got any job offers.
I have talked with the international center in my university, they are saying that if I don’t get employed before the end of 90 days period of unemployment, l will be violating the visa status. That is why I have decided to change my visa status as soon as possible through I-539.
My question is, do I have to maintain my current visa status that is F-1 OPT, until my I-539 gets approved? Or can I abandon my current visa status after applying for I-539?
Also, is there a grace period to stay here in United States, after abandoning my F-1 visa status?
