no last name on passport//// plzzz help!!

Hi ,

I am bit concerned about my brother who has no last name on his passport and all other educational documents. Some how come he never noticed it before . Now he is applying for post graduation in computer science in US.
Is it possible for him to apply without a last name in any of the documents and will that cause any problem during his interview at the embassy?
