  • US Intern Work Visa Issues- Please Help!

    Hi everyone,

I was offered an internship at a small VC in SF. I'm an Irish citizen and thus called the US embassy info line (€2.5 per min!!!) just to find out they dont actually tell you with any certainty which visa you need. Considering I havent been a student for 4 years I understood J1 visa wouldn't work for me. I applied for the B1 (which I now understand to be pointless thanks to VWP) and was turned down. I was also told I'd need an H1B visa!

My employer is not paying me, they do not usually take on interns, especially foreign ones, and thus dont have a DS 219 form?! I'm going on shaky us embassy info line information here and all I want to know is what is the best way for me to go work for 2 months in the US? It's not paid, I have been accepted to college in Spain starting November (proof that I'll leave and may allow me to use J1?!)

Desperate to make this work without my employer having to petition to get me over! Does anyone know what the petition involves in terms of challenges and whether it would be easier for me to ask the employer to get a ds 219 form and thus allow me to apply for J1?!

THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP, I NEED IT!!

Hi there, your post, a few years back i know, is quite similar to my dilemma now. I'm a british student still at university and i have an internship in DC for 7 weeks this summer, and like you i'm very confused by what visa i need. Considering your post was a bit of time ago, i was wondering what you ended up doing to go over to the US. Cheers, Alex
