Help ASAP!

I was wondering if you can visit another city in the US before I go to my place of resident? I want to visit a friend in Atlanta one week before I go to study for an exchange year in another city. Is that all right or do they have any restrictions for that?

I've read that you can enter the USA 30 days before your visa starts but couldn't find anything about visiting another city before arriving to the intended university city where I will be staying.

Please help ASAP need to book my flight!
