My name is Nikhil. I have an Indian passport. While I was
travelling in South America I lost my passport. I have been living in
US for the past 15 months as a student in U of Pennsylvania on an F1
Visa. I graduated this fall with a masters degree, moved to optional
practical training status and also got a job. I was
travelling in Chile before I start working. As I lost my passport, I also lost the F1 Visa stamp. So I need your counsel in this matter.
I have obtained a new Indian passport from the indian embassy in
Santiago, Chile. But the problem is in getting US visa. I went to the
US consulate in Santiago. They dont let anyone into the consulate
unless you have a visa interview. The only way to apply is through
agencies, which dont know a whole lot about the procedure.
Normally if you lose a passport you need to reapply for a new Visa.
The earliest available date for an interview here is Feb 15. I am not
allowed to stay in Chile for that long. Nor do I want to stay because
I have nothing to do here. I wish to present my case as an emergency.
But they may or may not accept it. Moreover, they may or may not grant
me a new visa. This is not all:
- I was on a F1 Visa and since I graduated this fall, I have moved to
the Optional Practical Training status. Will it be a problem getting a
new F1 visa because I have graduated? I am not sure if I should apply
for an F1 visa or some other kind of visa.
- My original F1 visa was issued in India so the US embassy in
Santiago may ask me to go to India for a new visa.
On the brighter side:
- I have got a new passport
- a report from police about lost passport
- original I-20 form
- EAD card
- offer letter from employer
- fotocopies of lost passport, F1 visa, I-94
- many forms of identity in US
- enough funds to support myself in US untill the time I start working.
Can you please suggest me what to do?
