My STEM OPT ended and now I'm moving to another country. Was wondering if there was anything I needed to do (in the legal sense) before moving out of the US? I have already submitted my final I-983 validation form.
When your STEM OPT (Optional Practical Training) has ended and you plan to move to another country, there are a few things you should consider in the legal sense before leaving the United States. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
Notify your Designated School Official (DSO): It is essential to inform your DSO about your change in circumstances and your plans to leave the country. They can provide guidance and update your SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) record accordingly.
Maintain valid immigration status: Make sure that your immigration status remains valid until your planned departure date. Keep track of any visa or immigration document expiration dates and ensure that you comply with all applicable regulations.
Settle any outstanding obligations: Before leaving the US, ensure that you have settled any outstanding financial obligations, such as taxes, loans, or other financial responsibilities.
Review your I-983 validation form: Since you have already submitted your final I-983 validation form, confirm that all the necessary information is accurate and up to date. Keep a copy of this form for your records.
Return your I-94 record: If you have a paper I-94 card, it is generally recommended to surrender it to the appropriate authorities upon departure. If you have an electronic I-94 record, it will be automatically updated upon exiting the US.
It's important to consult with an immigration attorney or seek advice from your DSO for personalized guidance based on your specific circumstances. They can provide you with accurate and up-to-date information on any additional requirements or procedures that may be applicable in your case.
