French student Visa expires next month

I'm a 19 year old student and my student visa expires on the 28th of september 2023. I've already validated my visa and was planning on continuing my studies in France for another year. However , I was not told that I would have to extend my residency permit in France itself and I'm currently back at home(not in france).

Could I still travel to France and get the process of extending my residence permit done (I have an American passport , I'm not sure if that makes a difference).
