  • Can I apply for an SSN in this scenario?

Context: I worked on-campus for 2-3 weeks with a valid I-9 and approval from our ISS. During that time, I didn’t apply for an SSN, but I’d like to get one now to apply for a credit card and file taxes for next year.

I don’t plan to work again, but can I apply for an SSN now since I’ve already worked, or do I need to secure another job to be eligible?

You should try to get the SSN based on your previous job even if you are no longer working. You will need a letter from your DSO and verification of your employment like an employer letter or pay stub. If the pay stub is not recent, they may have to verify it with the employer, but it is okay even if the employer says you are no longer working. You can show them RM 10211.270(B) from the SSA POMS:
Verify with the employer that the student is working or did work for that employer if the pay slip is not recent or there is any other reason to question its authenticity. If the employer confirms the work but indicates that the student is no longer working, treat this as employment verification and process the SSN application. Even when the student is no longer working, if employment status is confirmed, the employer will need the SSN for wage reporting purposes.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
