If you leave the US for a semester there is no requirement from immigration point of view to maintain full-time student status.
In order to return on the same Visa you should not stay out for more than 5 months.
Speak with your academic adviser and your international student adviser about need to take a break for 1 semester and inform the academic advisor that there is no need for you to maintain enrollment while outside the US.
Also, do you have to take the hard courses only? Can the requirement be met with easier electives? Consider that.
