  • Extending Thesis completion time F1 student

    Hi,

I'm currently completing a masters in industrial design and just have to complete a masters thesis. However I have found work as an internship and would really prefer to push my completion semester to spring 2013 rather than the forthcoming spring 12.

I have already taken 2 reduced course loads. I am in very good standing with the college, advisors, professors, etc. I know if I was a US resident this would not be a problem but as an F1 student I know it might not be allowed.

However, does anyone know of any circumstances where I can now complete my thesis a year from now rather than this spring? I have a medical condition which I could use as a reason and I'm pretty sure my Doctor would support me. However the real reason I want to extend the time is because I have discovered a fantastic new idea for my thesis project and would need the extra time to really make a great job of it. My professors do not have a problem with me extending time but I'm unsure as to what the regulations are.

Anyway, I have been in the US since Jan 2009 and always in status. My visa runs to 2014 I believe. I have contacted the international student services at my university but have not been able to schedule an advising appointment as yet. Any advice or help here is greatly appreciated.

This is complicated, discuss this with your school's DSO. You have options of CPT or OPT.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.
