  • Which visa will I get easily - student or dependent visa?

    Hello everyone,

I am about to finish my M.Tech from IIT Kharagpur in May 2012 and have got married in Jan 2012 recently. My husband is currently doing his MS in UCB and will try to finish it by Dec 2012, after which he will seek a job in USA and India both. I want to join him in USA as soon as possible and I want to know which option to take.

    1. Apply for student visa (F1)? - I have applied to 4 universities and expecting to get admission in atleast one.

    2. Apply for dependent visa(F2)? - I would prefer this.

What are my chances of getting accepted/rejected for both? Can the fact that my husband is studying MS be a reason for getting my F2 visa rejected, on grounds that we might immigrate?

Will be very glad if anyone can help. Thanks a lot.

Your chances should be about the same for both. If you really want to study you should go for F1 and if you don't want to study go for F2.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

      try for dependent

the chances are same, but the point is if you want to study there then why you want to go there on dependent visa, for the study you can apply for study visa, other wise you need any type of visa then dependent visa is good option.

        Doubt not yet cleared

Thanks for the prompt reply. But I didn't put up my point clearly.

I am already getting my Masters degree from IIT this May and have applied not for PHD but for MS again, as a second option. If the chances of getting a dependent visa are less, only then I would apply for student visa. I dont want to study further.

That's why I wanted to know if I can easily get a dependent F2 visa. My husband will be finishing his MS in Dec this year and wants to work in USA for 2-3 yrs after that. I am leaving a job I have got through campus placements and willing to stay without work in USA atleast for first few months. What are the chances that they will reject my visa saying that we have plans to immigrate? And how do I avoid this situation?

I hope I made my point clear this time and you can help. Thanks!!
