Change of Status --- H1B to F1 query

Hi

My husband got admission in an university for his doctoral studies. So, he is planning to apply for a change of status from H1B to F1 visa.

After he applies for a change of status and gets his receipt number, would it create any issue in his change of status petiton if his H1B gets invalid as he is planning to take off from work for some time before he joins his school.

Please advice. Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that he will still need to keep his status valid while his COS is being processed. So if during the COS his H1-B becomes invalid and he receives an RFE from the USCIS, this could pose a problem.
