best suggestion is not to travel outside US. when your visa has expired and u want to return to US after traveling to india, the process is the same as applying for a new visa. given the current unpredictable situation, i would suggest that u dont jeopardize ur education by traveling to india. i had a bad experience last year when they cancelled my f1 visa though it was valid for 4 more months and i had gone to india to renew it. i know of a few other cases where they have done the same.
