  • F1 Visa in Canada

I came to US on F1 in May 2003. My visa stamp expired in Oct 2003. I did one year of studies and then nearly one year of OPT. I am currently enrolled as a MS student on F1.
I want to know if I can go to Canada or Mexico and get a visa stamp?
Does my I-94 allow me to come back to US even if visa stamp is rejected?
What documents do I need to take for interview?

    Thanks

One can go to Canada or Mexico to get your visa stamped, but the only risk is that if for some odd reason you get rejected you have no option to reenter and need to go back home. It's a risk you are taking.

I knew few friends who got their visa stamped and some who could not. so it's kinda mixed response.

The documents required is ur current I-20, previous I-20 from the university, Transcripts, financial statement, Best advise is to go ur International office for the correct set of documents they will defintely help you

      F1 Visa Stamping

      Hi,

I am in a similar situation right now like the one you were in. My nationality is Indian. I was on H1B and I have changed my status from H1B to F1. I have joined my university as a full-time student and now I need to get F1 visa stamping. I would like to know few things about F1 stamping.

      • Should I go to Canada or Mexico? Which one would be quick and easy?
      • Does the processing time differ from one US Consulate to other? Is there any particular US Consulate/Embassy in Canada or Mexico that I should be going to so the process is quick and easy for me?
      • What documents do I need to provide to the US Consulate? Do the document requirements differ from one US Consulate to the other?
      • How much time the visa stamping process would take?
      • Since my status has already been changed are there still any chances of rejections? If yes, then what are my options?
      • How sooner do I need to take appointment with the US Consulate? How much is the waiting period?

Your feedback would be highly appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

      Ankit Patel.

          Pankaj,

As far as US Consulate in Canada concerned you are a resident of a third country, which means you are applying for the US visa in Canada and you have an Indian citizenship. A person in the other message mentioned that the outcome can be really unpredictable.
If you have got your valid I-20 I would suggest stamping your passport already in India - as it is just a formality as you have a valid status.
In case you decide to do that stamp in Canada you need to prepare the documents showing that you will go back home to India after your program is finished. Also prepare to wait a few days until you receive your visa.

          Best of luck!
