Should I hire the services of an attorney for the TN visa or could i just do everything on my own?

if you are a Canadian Citizen and will be going to border to get TN visa, there is absolutely no need for attorney as long as you have valid employment letter from a reputed company. i came through TN visa via Peace Bridge, Niagara in year 2011.
