transit visa requirements for Amsterdam

Hello everyone,

i need urgent advise on the need for a transit visa.

I am planning for a vacation to hyderabad, India and intend to fly by NorthWest Airlines via Amsterdam from USA.

the visa's on both mine and my wife are expired but i hold a valid i-94 extended till nov 2008.

i will be staying in the airport as there is a 6 hour halt between the flights. Do i need to have transit visa for this and what is the process i need to follow for getting it done before hand.
