transit visa information

Dear Mr./Mrs.,

I am a chinese citizen studying in chicago. I am going back to china in July and from there i will go to Brazil. On my way to Brazil, I will likely transit from one of the US airports. i want to know whether or not i (a chinese citizen) will need a transit visa when passing by the USA. if it will be needed, what documents do i need to submit when applying for it and where should i apply for it?
