Transit visa for non stop flight from newark to mumbai

I have valid indian passport with valid I94 till 2011.
My visa stamp has expired.I have filed for a new visa in india and going back for stamping.I am going by continental non stop flight from newark to mumbai with no stops in between
Do I need a transit visa ?

If you are not stopping by anywhere, then transit visa for what?
