Urgent Help Required - Travel to Canada for H4 visa stamping

Folks:

I want to go to CANADA and do my H4 stamping.....I intend to go by road.

Being an Indian, do i have to get a Visa before going there to the consulate or can i cross the border with a kind of TEMPERORY TOURIST PERMIT which they would provide when you cross there....

I have fix an appointment for the interview and then travel...

How does this work and what documents should i carry.

Please advise.
