Entering US with an ESTA and a passport with extended validity

I hold a Danish passport and live in London UK. I will be travelling to Florida on the 26th July but my passport expires while I am there.

Due to biometric requirements it will take a long time to get a new passport but I can have the validity period extended. I am trying to find out if I can apply for an ESTA with the extended passport and if this grants me access to the USA as usual or if I will have problems when I arrive.

I'd say you'd be ok, but I suggest you contact the US embassy in Copenhagen.
