WHP Canada and VWP America - how do they fit?

Hey there,
I am an Australian citizen, and I intend to spend 2014-15 in Canada on a working holiday visa. On my way there, I want to spend up to 60 days in the U.S. (May-June), and I would like to return to the U.S. for a month or so in October. Would I need to apply for a visa for either of the American trips or would the Visa Waiver Program be fine?

The VWP would be fine unless you have some criminal history, have ever overstayed in the US, or have ever been denied a visa. I'm sure you know you'd need a valid ESTA.
