What happens to LPR status if one applies for VWP/ESTA?

More of a technical question, am curious if a current LPR applies for VWP/ESTA as a Euro passport holder would the system reject that ESTA application? And if it approves does that invalidate the LPR status?

In other words could the ESTA be used as a transport letter to get state side and then present an expired green card to POE?

I am considering all options including SB-1. By the way regarding SB-1, if an LPR formally abandons via I-407 is he precluded from SB-1 at a later stage?
