I am a Canadian citizen and moved to the US with my family 15 years ago, as a high school student. I finished high school and continued on in the US as an international student at a state university. After graduating university, I decided to apply for graduate school; however, the program I wished to study required prerequisite courses. Without proper knowledge of my then current visa, I ended up overstaying (as I took over two semesters of classes, putting me over my allotted time allowed in the country) and as a result, I was deported from the US upon arriving at the border to have them sign my graduate student visa.
After appealing the deportation, I received an I-797 granting me access back into the US. Although I am allowed to re-enter, I decided to stay residing in Canada and just come back to the US to visit family and friends.
It has been 6 years that I have been living back in Canada and would now like to move back to the US. I understand that I must first be sponsored by an employer and go through the proper protocol to be granted a visa; however, my question is whether there will be any challenges, beyond the norm, that I will face due to my being deported 6 years ago.
What are my next steps?
Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
