Transit through US on way home to Australia after 90 day VWP

Hi, I will be in transit through the US from Canada to go back to my home country Australia. I have used up the 90 days available on the visa waiver program (VWP) in the US. I left the US on the 90th day, forgetting that although I am in Canada for couple more months I have a return ticket that takes me through the States to get home!

So the question I would be grateful if you can help with is: Can I go through the US in transit without a new visa to go home? If I do need a visa I guess that would be a C1, can I apply for this even though I am in a contiguous country at the end of the VWP?
