Visiting Girlfriend for 6 months

I am thinking of visiting my girlfriend (US national) in the USA for 6 months next year on a visitor visa (I am from the UK and will leave my main job). Do you think this will be fairly straightforward?

Oh no is this because they think I might stay there illegally afterwards? This is all new to me and I want to make sure I am 100% compliant. I presume I will need some firm way of saying I will be back in the uk after the 6 months. I wonder what this could be. Are there any other options I should look at?

Is it true that a visitor visa only lasts up to 6 months and you cant come back for a year afterwards? What happens if I wanted to move there for a longer period?

Generally, a visitor visa is for 10 years multiple entry. I have heard, based on how your interview goes at the POE you are given a 6 month period to be a visitor. First time visitors generally get a 6 month period to stay. If the stay has to extend, there is some stay extension form that needs to be filled and your stay can be extended. However, that is seen as an abuse of your visitors permit. Many people file for an extension of their stay. After that, when they visit the US again, they are given hardly a month as a visiting period. Depending on your circumstances, have you thought about a fiance visa ?
