Change Visa from Student Visa (F1) to Visitor (B2)

Hi,

I'm applying for a summer study program in the US for one month.
After that I would like to stay in the US for one month and a half more to travel around different cities.
I understand that I have to get a student Visa F1 to study there one month is that right ?
Then I would like to know how long and is it difficult to change a Visa F1 into a tourist visa (B2 ?). I already have all the flight tickets so I can show them that i'll be leaving the US after the one month and a half.
Do you know if I can apply directly in the United States ?!
