  • Visitor Visa (B2) name issue

My father had applied for US visitors visa (B2) from Mumbai India. On filling the DS-160 form he was facing issues in entering his full name His given name on the passport is too long and the space provided as against the given names in DS-160 did not allow him to enter the full name. Due to the space constraint we were not able to enter the last four characters of his name and proceeded with the application. His visa was sanctioned however now the name on the visa does not have the last four characters of his name. During the visa interview my father had informed the consular officer about the name issue and they asked us to inform the people at the center. We also informed the people at the center but when the visa arrived the last four characters of his name were missing. What should we do now?. Will this incomplete name pose a problem with the immigration during his visit.
Has any one else faced such a problem? We are planning the visit in next 20 days and need to know what is to be done , please assist me about the further action.

There is nothing you can do. If the name is too long, it will remain truncated.

He will face all kind of issues at different places in the US. For example, if his first name is RAVINDRACHANDRA, depending upon various places and the no of characters allowed in each of their system, his first name might be written as
    RAVINDRACHANDRA
    RAVINDRACHANDR
    RAVINDRACHAND
    RAVINDRACHAN
    RAVINDRACHA
    RAVINDRACH
    RAVINDRAC
    RAVINDRA
    RAVINDR

    and so on.

The only solution is to go for a legal name change and get a shorter name. This will not happen immediately but a long term and only solution.

You should get the visa name corrected by contacting the center
before leaving ( reschedule departure if necessary).

Though he would not have any problems entering,
(They do not match the passport name with the visa name at US airport.)
But there could be issues , on subsequent visits as a visitor, if he applies for an extension of his stay or future immigrant visa applications .

The reason is the I-94 arrival departure record
which he will complete while entering US.

I have a different take on this subject. Typically Indian names are long and more than likely have multiple words. On top of that we have variations based on geographycal regions which dictate placement of surname (last name or family name).

So the issue you quoted in not at all unique. It is normal that the name mentioned on the visa captures as much of the name as possible and the rest are truncated. I do not see any issue for your father to travel with the document he has. As an example my dad who has visited me several times (2 different US Visitor Visas), has a given name that has 4 different words and in total 25 char. long. Guess what? The visa had only the first two words of the given name and he never had any issues. His Indian passport however has the full name.

I do not particularly like the idea of changing the name!!
