Do I need to show day by day bookings to get tourist visa?

I hold an Indian passport, live in India and am planning to go on a road trip in the US with a friend. He will drive down from Texas to meet me in LA. From there we will go around a little and come back to San Francisco and I fly back to India from SF. When I apply for Visa do I need to show proof of day by day bookings for the road trip? Frankly it is likely to be an open ended journey and we will probably stay over in a small town every other night. I am going on a self-support basis- that is not being sponsored by my friend in the US. I will do all my paperwork myself and probably get an invitation letter from my US friend. Would that do?

Day to day itinerary is not important.

More important are your age, marital status , work and income in India.

In view of you purpose , your travel history to other countries is also important.
