  • B2 Visa - To self sponsor or ask cousin to sponsor - Dilemma for a Freelancer

    Hi ,
I am a male , 30 yrs, unmarried and have been working as a freelancer in IT with a top notch client for the past 7 months. Before that I was employed with a top Indian MNC but quit last Sept. I intend to visit USA for two months from June to July for purely tourism purposes and attend a very close friend's wedding. Considering my status as a freelancer and my marital status being single, I am confused as to what would be the best way to proceed when it comes to sponsorship and show my commitment to come back to India. Can you kindly recommend me the best course of action given the salient details below ?

-> My freelancing pay is pretty good in the range of 3.5-4 L per month for the past seven months. But do not have the tax returns yet and I was based out of UK from 2009 Dec to 2011 Dec . So I have the tax return only for the last year . My current contract is till June end but likely to be extended. I would get the confirmation of that only in June so would not be relevant to my visa application. So I cannot show that as continuity to come back to India as proof. So with such a situation would it make sense to apply as self sponsorship when I do not have all the relevant documents ?

-> My cousin is ready to sponsor me and his visa status is that his Greencard is in progress. I have already got the documents from him but yet to fill the DS 160 form. But read in this forum that my profile might work against me if am sponsored so thought will get better opinion on it from experienced folks here.

-> I do not have any property documents which proves my ties to my home country. With respect to property I have some land in my name and a house in my father's name where I have made financial contribution . But the house is not in my name .

-> I have no near relatives except for the aforementioned cousin in States. My sister and her family, my parents are based out of India .

    My concerns :

-> Would the freelancer status work against me given the above details ? What can I do to ensure my visa application is successful ?

Kindly let me know if I have covered all bases or missing out on any critical info.

    Regards ,

    - me

Firstly, your freelancer status and single marital status both act against you especially when the purpose is very casual.
Secondly, your purpose of 'going to Friend's wedding for 2 months " is very unnatural.

If it was a close relative getting married and you were going for 2 weeks , it would have made sense.

Even if you show your own funding, I think you have high chances of denial.

      Hi peace999 ,
Yes I understand but perhaps I didn't phrase it well enough My intention is tourism and since my friend's wedding is happening I thought it was as good a time as any to combine both. Also I am a freelance photographer - both travel and wedding - so a visit to Uncle Sam was always on the cards. Tourism is my genuine reason to visit so how else to put it ?

For tourism, they will look at your tour history to other countries. To make sure you are a genuine tourist and not someone
who won't return. 'Why US , why not europe or singapore?" they ask.

If you have the travel history , you can apply but
remember, due to your single marital status, your income in India is a decision maker.
If you cannot show good income of at least 10 L/yr , do not apply.
